AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Trucking Association (TXTA) is celebrating Rodney McNew’s one year anniversary as an American Trucking Associations’ America's Road Team Captain. In January 2024, McNew was among the 24 elite professional truck drivers selected for this two-year commitment, which recognizes drivers across the U.S. with exceptional safety and leadership skills.

McNew, based out of TXTA member Groendyke Transport’s Lubbock terminal, brings an impressive safety record to the team. With over 1.2 million accident-free miles in his 12-plus years at Groendyke and more than 3 million accident-free miles in his 35-year career, McNew exemplifies the high standards set for America's Road Team Captains. His outstanding performance earned him the title of Groendyke's Western Region Driver of the Year for 2022.

As an America's Road Team Captain, McNew will continue his last year in this position as an ambassador for the trucking industry. His responsibilities include attending industry events, speaking at schools, and meeting with policymakers to promote safe driving and educate the public about the trucking industry.

"I think of myself as a pretty average guy and to be able to go out and share a message of not only safety but my thoughts and memories of the trucking industry has been pretty special," said ATA Road Team Captain Rodney McNew.

As a Road Team Captain, McNew has already traveled to multiple states, including Colorado and Washington D.C., to promote road safety and share insights about the trucking industry. During his time in D.C. last January for the selection process, McNew witnessed touching moments of camaraderie among his fellow Captains - even before they were officially selected as part of America’s Road Team. Their willingness to engage and support each other made a lasting impression.

"Rodney’s appointment to America's Road Team is a testament to his exceptional skills and dedication to safety. His selection not only honors his individual achievements but also highlights the high standards of professionalism within the Texas trucking industry. We are proud to have Rodney represent TXTA and the state of Texas on this national platform," said TXTA President and CEO John D. Esparza.
