Controller


Job Description

The Controller is a key member of the TXTA executive leadership team, reporting directly to the President & CEO and the Chief Operating Officer.  The primary responsibility is to direct the fiscal functions of the association in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board, other regulatory and advisory organizations, and in accordance with financial management techniques and practices appropriate for a non-profit trade association (501(c)6). The Controller supervises all financial activities of the Texas Trucking Association, Southwest Movers Association, TXTA Services, TXTA Foundation, SMA Foundation, TXTA TruckPAC and SMA MovePAC. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees budgeting, billing, collections, vendor payments, payroll and audits
  • Responsible for managing employee benefit plans
  • Lead the annual budgeting process, providing insightful financial analysis and identifying opportunities for cost optimization and revenue growth
  • Reinvigorates and streamlines current accounting processes and procedures.
  • Works with TXTA Executive team to establish short- and long-term financial goals by forecasting capital, facilities, and staff requirements. 
  • Develops organizational fiscal strategies by analyzing financial and accounting information, evaluating trends, and establishing measurements.
  • Provides financial vision for the organization and maintains operations to fulfill the organization’s strategic mission and vision.
  • All filings and reports to the Texas Ethics Commission required to maintain compliance under chapter 305 of the Texas Government Code and the commission rules in Chapter 34 of Title 1 of the Texas Administrative Code (T.A.C.).
  • Monitors and manages cash flow, working capital, and liquidity to ensure financial stability and to optimize capital allocation
  • Primary liaison for investments between all assets managed under TXTA and outside financial advisors. 
  • The Controller works closely with TXTA Leadership Team, Executive Committees, Board of Directors, Finance and Investment Committees, financial institutions and government agencies regarding financial activities and obligations

Core Functions  

  1. Financial management – conducts internal analysis to determine if the organization is utilizing their staffing and procedural resources efficiently and smoothly, ensures accounting and database systems, procedures and controls and all operating components of TXTA and its affiliates have the accurate and timely financial information they require to fulfill business objectives that includes external audits, tax reporting, banking and accounting.  
  2. Asset Management - oversees TXTA’s  real estate and facilities assets and manages to minimize cost and maximize return and the financial assets, including cash balances, are managed to produce maximum return possible while meeting operating requirements.  
  3.  Risk Management - assures that all property and casualty risks are understood, and that appropriate insurance coverage is bound where appropriate.
  4. Strategic Planning and Budgeting – oversees all TXTA accounts,   budgets and works with TXTA Leadership to accurately manage resources.
  5. Optimizes revenue – presents formulated and efficient strategies to fully optimize the revenue earned from TXTA meetings and conferences, affinity partnerships, rent, interest and dividends as well as the sales of products and activities.
  6. Membership— works with internal partners in Membership, to ensure that TXTA meets all objectives for membership dues and non-dues revenue.
  7. Board Presentation – presents TXTA financial information, trends, losses, etc. to multiple groups of TXTA and SMA stakeholders: Boards of Directors, Compensation Committees, Management Committees, etc.  Partners with other TXTA leaders to compile appropriate information to share.
  8. Ethics and regulatory filings – produce and ensures that all required ethics and sales tax filings are submitted to meet all filing deadlines; coordinates with external income and franchise tax filing firm to ensure compliance and timely filing of returns. 

Expected Qualifications  

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field.
  • At least 4 years of experience in finance or accounting.
  • At least 2 years of experience leading a full-service accounting team.
  • Previous experience in associations or non-profits with a strong familiarity with membership organization and membership dues structures highly preferred. 
  Skill Requirements 
  • Must possess strong financial accounting skills including experience with monthly closing process and financial statement issuance.
  • Must have previous success establishing and maintaining new and/or streamlined accounting processes. Must have previous success presenting financial data and trends to large groups
  • Strong understanding of financial systems and databases, experience with Sage Accounting highly preferred.
  • Must possess strong leadership skills, understand how to delegate, automate processes, and motivate others.
  • Background in consulting with a history of “revitalizing” organizations a plus.
  •  Must be customer-service oriented, organized, and attentive to detail. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required

Professional Certifications/Accreditations 

  • CPA preferred but not required.
